Director Merle Becker crosses the country interviewing rock poster artists from the different eras to discover that America is currently in the midst of a 21st century "rock poster art movement", where thousands of artists around the country are doing silk screened rock poster art inspired by their local scene, the music of our time, and the spirit of our era.Freakfilms, Inc (Music Video / EPK & Documentary Production co.)noreply@blogger.comBlogger26125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465351245466987176.post-77836883742887706892010-03-12T13:33:00.001-08:002010-03-12T13:33:50.479-08:00This blog has moved
This blog is now located at http://freakfilmsinc.blogspot.com/.
You will be automatically redirected in 30 seconds, or you may click here.

For feed subscribers, please update your feed subscriptions to
http://freakfilmsinc.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default.

Freakfilms, Inc (Music Video / EPK & Documentary Production co.)noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465351245466987176.post-82506463684998871772010-02-27T16:12:00.000-08:002010-03-12T13:29:31.383-08:00Boston Premiere!Thank you to everyone who came out to the American Artifact premiere in Boston! - Special thanks to Tracy, Clif and everyone at the Bordy for a great time / packed screening! Places like the Grande Ballroom had this incredible psychedelic scene going on that often gets overlooked when people talk about ‘60s rock".

Detroit artist Gary Grimshaw, among others, was responsible for a large number of posters and flyers that were done for the Grande Ballroom. In the movie, Gary recalls how he became involved in doing rock posters:

"I was friends with Rob Tyner (the lead singer of the MC5), and they were the first act to play the Grande. So, Rob suggested to the club owner that I do the first poster", explained Gary. "And, I just kept doing them from there."

Gary has gone on to do hundreds of posters, handbills, and flyers, which have also served as inspiration for Detroit artist Mark Arminski to follow in his steps.

"I’ve always been drawn to this type of art" explains Mark. "I used to sit in my classes in high school, and instead of paying attention, I used to draw my own fake handbills based on Gary’s styles".

Mark went on to design posters for acts like Iggy Pop, Kid Rock, Siouxsie and The Banshees, and Patti Smith.

Both Mark and Gary can be seen in books like "The Art of Modern Rock", and they have been celebrated in the rock community for years. Mark has also recently assembled a collection of his work which is also on display at Detroit’s Henry Ford Museum as part of their "Rock Stars’ Cars and Guitars 2" exhibit.

Tickets to the movie are $15, and include admission to Mark Arminski’s show. They are available at the door. The movie starts at 7p.

Freakfilms, Inc (Music Video / EPK & Documentary Production co.)noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465351245466987176.post-20699205065697724532009-07-08T21:20:00.000-07:002009-08-30T08:54:50.744-07:00A Note to Our Fans...Hello Rock Art Lovers and fans of American Artifact!

We just wanted to thank everyone who has shown support for the movie. We've had such an amazing time at the screenings so far - meeting y'all, hearing your questions, hanging out after the screenings, etc.

And, without a doubt, our fans are the BEST. We love reading your emails, seeing your reactions to the new posters and photos we've put up on Facebook, etc.

We couldn't ask for a cooler bunch of fans, you guys rock.

We wanted to let you know that we haven't been ignoring all your screening suggestions and emails. We're still working hard to add cities to our roster through the end of this year and into the next.

We promise you, we're working on many of the cities you've mentioned. Currently, LA, Austin, Seattle, and Cleveland are still in the works, and a bunch more (which may be a bit premature to post at the moment) are being ironed out.

Believe me, it's just as frustrating for us to not be able to get this movie out to every city asap, but we're workin' on it! It just takes a little time for an indie to get around, if ya know what I mean ;)

So, we just wanted to say thank you for being patient. Hang in there - We hear you, and we hope to rock your part of the world real soon...!

Sincerely,
The AA Crew

Freakfilms, Inc (Music Video / EPK & Documentary Production co.)noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465351245466987176.post-18297356199669178772009-06-27T11:48:00.001-07:002009-08-30T07:03:06.448-07:00Premiere / Cali Screenings!A big thank you to all who came out to the sold out shows in San Francisco and Sacramento this past week! Reportedly, a rockin' good time was had by all...!

Ogilvy visited Chuck and Ron at their studio before the show - Check out their pictures: http://dev.ogilvywest.net/nextshow/behind-the-squeegee-at-firehouse/

Firehouse will also be hand silk screening John Van Hamersveld's official poster for the TRPS "Rock Art By The Bay" poster this week, the event at which "American Artifact" will be world premiering at next week:

Fore more info on Firehouse, check out their video at:
http://www.AmericanArtifactMovie.com (under MOVIE POSTERS).

And, read a little more about them here:
http://www.juxtapoz.com/index.php?option=com_events&task=view_detail&agid=1491&year=2009&month=1&day=16&Itemid=125

Freakfilms, Inc (Music Video / EPK & Documentary Production co.)noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465351245466987176.post-14490774975784745572009-04-22T17:10:00.000-07:002009-04-22T19:27:32.337-07:00John Van HamersveldTRPS (The Rock Poster Society) unveiled their poster for "Rock Art By The Bay" today, the event at which we will premiere "American Artifact":

The poster was done by none other than John Van Hamersveld - And, for those of you asking yourself "who is John Van Hamersveld?", here's your answer:

John is perhaps best known for a little album cover he did for The Beatles:

Or, maybe it's the one he did for the Grateful Dead:

He also was responsible for The Rolling Stones "Exile On Main Street" cover:

And, among others, album covers for Jefferson Airplane "Crown of Creation", Kiss "Hotter Than Hell", Blondie "Eat to the Beat", Steve Miller "Fly Like and Eagle", and the list goes on.

John's 1969 "Grinning Johnny" image is also said to have been the inspiration for John Pasche's design for the Rolling Stones' "Lips / Tongue" logo.

In addition to his concert poster and album cover work, he is perhaps most often remembered for the iconic movie poster image that he created for the 1966 documentary surf film, "The Endless Summer":

Anyone who lived in California around 1966 will attest to the fact that the "Endless Summer" poster hung in just about every surfer kid's bedroom, garage, or the like.

We're honored to have John's hand behind the design for the TRPS poster bearing our premiere announcement - It's an honor indeed!

John's book, "Post Future" is due out later this year, and is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.com.

Freakfilms, Inc (Music Video / EPK & Documentary Production co.)noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465351245466987176.post-46844383463454785322009-04-02T18:36:00.000-07:002009-04-27T14:31:26.919-07:00June 20th premiere"American Artifact" movie premiere announced: June 20th in San Francisco!

"American Artifact: The Rise of American Rock Poster Art", the long-awaited documentary about the history and resurgence of the American Rock Poster, is scheduled to premiere June 20th, in San Francisco, as part of The Rock Poster Society's "Rock Art By The Bay" event.

The film, four years in the making, is the story of one of America's truest folk art forms, the rock poster.

Beginning in the 1960s in San Francisco with the birth of the dance concert, a rock poster accompanied almost every show that was put on during that era.

"At the time, Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead were not played on the radio, and the only way you could advertise their shows, was by hanging posters in the streets", explains author Robert Greenfield, from the film.

Soon, people began pulling the posters off of the telephone poles, almost as quickly as they were put up, and promoters such as Bill Graham started to give them out at the end of his shows to advertise the next week's show.

The art, both beautiful and edgy, closely parallels the changes in American culture throughout the decades.

"Posters" in the '80s were "flyers" done for punk shows on Xerox machines in local libraries, or at Kinko's. They were glued to buildings and phone poles surreptitiously at night by kids in the scene. In this pre-computer era, the flyers were, for lack of a better comparison, "the MySpace of the '80s".

Today, America is seeing a resurgence in this art form, brought upon by the popularity of websites like Gigposters.com, and the ease of silk screening.

This extraordinary film, which includes interviews with over 30 artists, takes the viewer on a journey through the different decades and incarnations of this rebellious art form, and spends time with, arguably, some of the finest artists of this era.

For more information on the movie premiere, and to purchase advance tickets, please visit: www.freakfilms.com/aa/tab2.html.

Freakfilms, Inc (Music Video / EPK & Documentary Production co.)noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465351245466987176.post-9367309804615081512009-03-12T12:55:00.000-07:002009-11-05T18:55:37.584-08:00Thank youAs most people know, it is somewhat difficult to pull off the completion of an independent film. Unless you have a big corporate sponsor, rich uncle, or winning lottery ticket, most of the time, you are relying on personal savings, spare time, and, one very important thing: the graciousness and support of others.

As we close the books on legal clearances, audio mixes, color correcting, and the like, I'd like to take a moment to acknowledge some of the people who have shown their kindness and support for the project. Some have donated their music, art, or footage to this production. Some have been gracious with their time, information, and in some cases, their gallery or storefront. And, some have just been an incredible source of moral support for an often trying endeavor.

So, in no particular order, here goes.

MY SPECIAL THANKS GO TO:

- Chris Hanson for being my right hand.

The film had it's first focus group screening recently, and we got a lot of amazing feedback. All in all, the crowd was really psyched about the project and had some great things to say about it!

The film's trailer is now posted on the website: www.AmericanArtifactMovie.com . It features a song by NYC band, The Teenage Prayers. They're playing at CMJ in NYC this weekend, check them out if you're around. It's gonna be a great show!

Here's the code to use for those of you interested in putting the trailer on your website or blog (copy and paste).
It's missing the final touches, legal clearances, yada, yada. It's a version of the film that closely resembles the final product.

What does this mean for me? Well, it means a few weeks of walking away from the project... enjoying a little of what's left of the summer, getting my mind on other things besides rock posters, and then coming back in a week or two and taking a fresh look at the film, clearing the rest of the music and footage that still needs to be licensed, and then setting up a premiere for all of the fine folks that were part of the project.

I have to say, although it's going to be several months before all is "in the can" (another editor term - meaning everything has been finalized), I'm a little sad that most of the (creative) editing has come to a close.

One of the strange things about being a filmmaker, is that you sit in the edit for months with the subjects of your movie while you edit, listening to their footage, and they 'talk to you' every day. You hear about their life, work, inspirations, etc. Then suddenly the project ends, and it feels like suddenly your roommates have moved out...

I guess it could be compared to seeing the last episode of a TV show that you were really into, and knowing that there will be no more.

So, I guess I could sat that my "last episode of Seinfeld" was today.

That's not to say there's still a lot of other work to be done over the next few months, it's just that it won't involve sitting listening to the most amazing group of people I've ever had the fortune of creating a film about, every day. It's a bit sad, but at least it means we're looking at the light at the end of the tunnel, now.

To the right are a few more pictures. Video clips to follow soon.
xo

Freakfilms, Inc (Music Video / EPK & Documentary Production co.)noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465351245466987176.post-19398222143752260182008-08-04T07:14:00.000-07:002008-11-22T11:56:22.932-08:00Cream, The Animals, and Sid Bernstein...So, last night we weny to see Jack Bruce (Cream) and Eric Burdon (The Animals) at Bethel Woods, the original site of Woodstock. The show was unbelievable, and for someone born in the '70s, it's the closest I'll ever get to the bands from the '60s. We managed to score box seats, and the best part was our seats were right behind Sid Bernstein, the (and, I quote) "man who brought the Beatles to America". Yes, the promoter responsible for bringing the Beatles, and countless other bands (Stones, ABBA, look him up, you'll see why we were awestruck) to America.

We got into conversation and he asked what I did, and I mentioned the film. We got on the subject of Bill Graham, who Sid said he had never met, but "had incrdible respect for". He mentioned that he had just won a lifetime achievemnt award, and in his acceptance speech, said "Bill, this one's for you".

Sid had just celebrated his 90th birthday, and during the show, they made an announcement, and the stadium applauded him. At some point, someone from backstage had brought him dinner, and he kept turning around and (as if it wasn't nice enough for him to engage in conversation) he kept offering us pieces of chicken (which my husband and our friend Charlie accepted - it was great chicken, according to both of them).

What a genuinely kind person, I would have liked to have had more time (and, a quieter place) to talk.

As he was leaving, we said our goodbyes, and our buddy Charlie thanked him for the chicken. The man who was with Sid said "that's funny, people usually come up to him and say "Thanks for the Beatles". That's the first time we've heard "Thanks for the chicken".

Here's a pic:

Freakfilms, Inc (Music Video / EPK & Documentary Production co.)noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465351245466987176.post-47634567573477045872008-06-12T09:23:00.000-07:002009-01-03T13:15:36.543-08:00Alton KelleyI found out recently that Alton Kelley, one of the true original psychedelic poster artists of the '60s, passed away. It was devastating news.

(photo (crop) by Jim Marshall)

Alton was also one of the founding members of the Family Dog, and had collaborated with Stanley Mouse on countless iconic rock posters and album covers of that era, and into the '70s and '80s (Journey, Hendrix, Steve Miller, The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, and more):

He and Mouse had also created one of the most iconic rock posters in the history of the medium, the Grateful Dead's "Skeleton and Roses":

(copyright, the Family Dog)

Kelly had scheduled an interview with us when we were in San Francisco last summer, and he had cancelled at the last minute due to health problems.

His loss is truly devastating, not only in light of his invaluable contributions to American rock poster art, but as a personal admirer of his great body of work which inspired so many of the artists we spoke with.

He will be truly missed.

The press release sent out by his publicist read as follows:
"[Petaluma, CA - Sunday, June 1, 2008] Legendary artist Alton Kelley created a graphic style that rocked the world beginning in the psychedelic Sixties. His concert posters, logo designs, LP album covers, and fine art have forevermore defined that time. Kelley, born June 17, 1940, passed away peacefully at home June 1st of complications from a long illness.

He is survived by the true love of his life, Marguerite Trousdale Kelley. He also leaves his mother Annie, sister Kathy, and beloved children Patty, Yossarian, and China, and beautiful grandchildren Life and Lacoda."

Freakfilms, Inc (Music Video / EPK & Documentary Production co.)noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465351245466987176.post-6002603077506668962008-06-09T18:55:00.000-07:002008-10-24T07:36:36.595-07:00Screening Ad Nauseam...June is here, and by some act of God, we've managed to screen all of the footage up to this point - That is about 180 hours of it (and counting). It looks amazing, and if you're curious, a few shots from the film and some of the rough open animation made it into the company showreel which was updated this week:
Now begins the rough cut...

Freakfilms, Inc (Music Video / EPK & Documentary Production co.)noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465351245466987176.post-57116216518516911932008-03-31T17:29:00.000-07:002008-11-22T11:56:51.959-08:00Mouse...I'm going through the Stanley Mouse tapes this week. For those of you who know me, you know I'm an obsessive '60s-era history buff. So, you can imagine how much I enjoyed this interview. The time spent at Stanley's studio is something I'll never forget.

His studio is surrounded by this huge apple orchard. Before the interview, he picked several yellow apples which we ate throughout the day. Each one had this very sweet, distinct taste, and the flavors varied depending on which tree it came from.

Also, for those of you who know Stanley, you know that he is an extremely talented painter. We were surrounded by his beautiful paintings - paintings of women, music-inspired art, etc. It was hard to focus on filming while being surrounded by his amazing body of work.

And lastly, (and most importantly), for those of you who have had the pleasure of meeting Stanley, you know that he is one of the KINDEST, and most GENUINE people you will ever meet. He's got this sparkle in his eyes that immediately makes you aware of the good karma within. (If you've met him, you know what I'm talking about!)

So there we were, eating yellow apples, looking at beautiful paintings, and listening to a first-hand account of the San Francisco scene in the '60s from one of the kindest people walking this earth. I couldn't have asked for a better day.

Here's a pic:

Freakfilms, Inc (Music Video / EPK & Documentary Production co.)noreply@blogger.com0
