SAVING NEWBURGH:
(documentary feature, 2004)
"Saving Newburgh" is a probing, but light-hearted look at some of the political problems Newburgh, NY saw during the 2003 mayoral race.
The city was once called "The Best All-American City" by a leading publication. Nearly fifty years later, it has been labeled "The State's Most Violent City".
Newburgh currently has the largest declared historic discrict in the United States. It is home to a nearly unmatched array of historic homes and significant landmarks. It was home to George Washington during the Revolutionary War, and to Andrew Jackson Downing (architect and co-designer for Central Park in NYC). But despite it's historical significance, ideal location on the Hudson River, and proximity to NYC, they city still battles significant in-fighting and botched politics.
Newburgh took a dive in the 1960s, when Urban Renewal destroyed many of it's magnificent buildings. The construction of a bridge and a shopping mall put an end to the romanticic waterfront shopping area. And finally, the influx of self-serving political leadership gave Newburgh one final blow.
"Saving Newburgh" examines the past, then provides a revealing probe into the 2003 administration, which was rife with controversy. "Honest Mayor Wanted: Apply Newburgh, N.Y." bumper stickers were left around the city by outraged citizens after $380,000 of city funds were mysteriously transferred to friends of the administration. An underground website sprung up discussing both political and personal issues. As four candidates began their bid for the job of mayor, the notion of "working together to make this a better place" seemed far-fetched.
The film follows each candidate in their bid for the mayor's seat, as well as several prominent Newburgh citizens 'fighting' to bring the city back.
The film received an "Award of Excellence for Documentary Film" from the 2005 Berkeley Video and Film Festival, and is available for purchase from
